Coptic Orthodox Heritage
Our Coptic Orthodox Heritage
At St Bishoy College, we are deeply proud of our rich Coptic Orthodox heritage, which forms the foundation of our values, teachings, and community. Rooted in the ancient Christian tradition of Egypt, the Coptic Orthodox Church has preserved its faith and practices for nearly two millennia, offering a profound connection to the early church and its teachings.
The word "Coptic" originates from the Greek word Aigyptos, meaning Egypt. Over time, it became associated with the native Christian people of Egypt. Today, the term represents both the Coptic language, derived from ancient Egyptian, and the cultural identity of Coptic Orthodox Christians worldwide.
The Coptic Orthodox Church was established by St Mark the Apostle in the first century AD, making it one of the oldest Christian denominations in the world. Its teachings are deeply rooted in the Bible and the traditions of the early Church Fathers, reflecting a faith that is both ancient and enduring.
Our heritage emphasises living a Christ-centred life, marked by love, humility, and service to others. It also values education, spiritual growth, and the development of a strong moral foundation. At St Bishoy College, we seek to pass on these traditions to our students, nurturing them to grow in their faith and walk with God.
